Oh, The Grace!
"Amazing grace shall always be my song of praise,
For it was grace that bought my liberty.
I do not know just why He came to love me so.
He looked beyond all my faults, and saw my need."
- He Looked Beyond My Faults by Dottie Rambo
So last month my cousins and I were at a choir rehearsal, preparing for a funeral, and one of my cousins got a little emotional during the song "Amazing Grace." As we walked her outside for some air, we overheard someone asking why she was crying. Her reply was "the Grace got to me." We laughed at her sarcasm, but as I reflect on the memory, I can't help but wonder about the Grace.
Someone once explained the difference between grace and mercy to me. Apparently, mercy is when you didn't get the punishment that you did deserve, and grace is when you receive the blessings that you didn't deserve (or something like that, I'm paraphrasing). By that logic, you could say that grace is equivalent to favor. The song "He Looked Beyond My Faults" is one of my favorites, and I love it because it reminds me that I do have many faults, but it was the grace of God that kept me free from the prison that my sinful nature would have me to reside in. My Father saw that I was in dire need of saving, and instead of letting me rot in hell which is where I was destined to go, He swooped in and gave me a chance to be free. I am bought with a price, and I know no better owner.
It was by His grace that I am able to sit here, of sound mind and spirit, and write these words of testimony. It is by His grace that I was able to go to church this morning of my own accord, and witness the glory of God for myself (some people got saved today, y'all!). It was by His grace that I got into this crazy program, and remained in it despite the fact that I went through months of anxiety and self-pity, neither of which have any place in God, and are not examples of faith. It is by His grace that I have talents, and that I can call on them, in spite of the times I refused to let my light shine.
It is by His grace that I can boldly tell the Devil to "get thee behind me" and have the confidence that he WILL flee because I have the power of the Holy Ghost inside of me and I'm not afraid to use it! Amazing grace will always be MY song of praise because it was by the Grace of God that I am here today, free, living a holy life, and glad about it! I will FOREVER lift my eyes to Calvary because the Cross was where the price was paid and Jesus died for me. How marvelous was the grace that caught my falling soul. My Father looked beyond my failings, my faults, my flaws. He saw what I needed. By His grace he saved, healed and delivered me. And His Grace is sufficient for me.
For it was grace that bought my liberty.
